bubble          In present day people tend to idolize only two female icons; Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn.Taking a personal bullet here admitting I’m not fond of either.Idolizing these icons style is safe in the fashion industry and I get why these two sensational ladies appeal to the public eye.A majority of people in the United States favor them. Marilyn Monroe, “the queen of seduction” has been labeled all kinds sexy because of her voluptuous body. Ironically Monroe body is still idolized, even though we’re living in the world where it is sexy to be thin.Luckily in not your typical 6’0 size 0 model you can see the evolution of models and how the world is slowly accepting other ideas of beauty. On the other hand, Audrey Hepburn was viewed as classy and different because she was thin all around in a decade where the only woman with larger breast would be noticed.

In my opinion in an industry obsess with what unique, it would be refreshing to find a designer who is not scared of playing it safe anymore.

An all black collection an all white collection, I’m finding lately is getting boring and repetitive.

Instead of repeating the typical icons why not refer to someone new.

Finding a muse that will eventually share the limelight in the long run if they execute her style well. I believe it will pay in the long run because the household name, Guess already did with Brigitte Bardot.

Any designers looking for inspirations should pay close attention to 60’s actress Marisa Mell. Her bangs and long mane couldn’t hide the fact that she was an exquisite beauty.

She always wanted to be an actress and chased her dream as soon as she finished studying acting. She even married director Henrri Tucci yet she kept getting low budget roles. A few roles later she found herself in a terrible car accident. As many directors started to lose interest in her as an actress she turns a negative into a positive undergoing a couple plastic surgery she can partially give credit to a horrible car accident for her new found fame. Thanks to the accident its major scar was causing her upper lip to curl but many people agreed that it didn’t falter her face except gave it a more distinctive look. Thanks to this look she gain higher paid British roles. She was known as a sex symbol and she played the role well but after a while as she aged so did the role. She later died after her last film, “I love Vienna”.

mellmellOverall I just rather see the limelight bestowed on other women who paved their way.I rather see it more in the coming seasons. Is there a muse you think designers should be inspired in their next collection? If so who?

  1. Hey Melody, I think Lupita would be a good muse, at the same time I think people like what they like and if you want to see a difference it should be a personal decision to do so. If I had it my way I would want to see black models all the time because I identify with them more than other group. I think the designers who do make strives in diversity should be hi lighted more because they actively work to change the conversation. Rick Owen’s show from a few years ago was a good example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WfAmL-dIBQ

    1. Lupita is so beautiful I agree.I saw the Rick Owens video and it was so moving.I’m more familiar with his recent shows.I agree with you diversity should always be key.Designers are looked up to many, similar to how we look at celebrities and they have the ability empower.I made a personal decision to make this blog.To voice my opinion. The slogan is for the real girls in the industry.I’m not just showcasing outfits and tagging them to do so.I try and different way to bring it to people attention. For example when I get invited to events I’m aware of the crowd.I want to be amongst more humble individuals that really appreciate the beauty of art and textiles and really want to make a change in the industry.
      In my post https://sheismelrose.wordpress.com/2015/09/19/the-real-nyfw2015/
I went to one show because I admire the supermodel showcasing emerging designers in the city and who built a foundation to help clean the water in Africa where she is from.

  2. Love the article, I didnt know that Bardots claim to fame was after a car accident! My pick would have to be Eartha Kitt, she is my Marlyin Monroe!

    1. It was Marisa Mell that had the accident.Yet I loved the fact that Guess went and picked out Bridgett instead of the typical Marilyn as their muse.Eartha Kitt I never knew who she was.I started looking it to her can’t believe how multi-talented she was an actress, singer, cabaret star, dancer, stand-up comedian, activist and voice artist can you say superwoman lol
