OMG Shoes.jpgHere we are again, naked trees are gradually blossoming. The sun will come out of the winter hibernation and look over us. My roommate, Jeff and I are currently looking out the window wistfully thinking “spring weather” can happen now. Instead of being gloomy, we decided to be productive and have an SPRING-CLEANOUT. Get ready for a lot of useful tips …

Take a deep breath… roll up your sleeves and before you start digging through the piles of clothes imagine the fashion police in your closet. They stop you and asked you the following:

Bag Display

  • Does the studded leather jacket REALLY fit?
  • Have you worn this  within the last year (be honest)?
  • Be true to yourself will that one-time flashy birthday outfit ever  be worn again?
  • Does the all-over printed sweater truly represent your style?
  • Are you going to legitimately fix the broken zipper on your leather purse, repair the missing button or keep the garment to help you collect the dust in your closet?
  • Will the dirt ever really come off that bright white collared blouse?
  • Is this item of clothing a positive mood booster ?

Now that you went through the trial and tribulations of figuring out what to keep and what not to keep. You are stuck with multiple piles of clothes. DON’T FRET, here’s what to do with the clothes that didn’t make the cut!

  • “SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY” – Is one of my favorite songs of all time (c’mon who doesn’t like Donna Summer) Good thing is you don’t have to work hard to make extra cash. Poshmark  is one of the main fashion apps where women come together to buy and sell clothing/accessories straight from the closet.
  • Bestow for the greater good –The well known Good Will is a great place to donate. If you hold on to your receipt at the end of the year you can claim a tax reduction.
  • Have you ever swap clothes with a sibling and they moved to another side of the country so you can’t do it anymore? Even if you can’t relate you can swap the clothes that are “eh” to something WOW when you try Dig and Swap. A site where you can swap clothes even if it’s not your thing it doesn’t hurt to try.

Platforms Baby

Ok let’s take a break and drink some water because you will need some energy for the final steps, oh the joy of organizing (trust me it’ll be better in the long run)

organize
His Clothes
  • Separate your closet into loose categories. Sweaters are now on the left while jackets are on the right.
Scarf Hanger
  • While the infinity scarf season is slowly disappearing we are not really committed to letting it go. So set your lightweight scarfs on a hanger that withholds separation to help you style quickly and efficiently.

Perfect Closet.jpg

  • For all shoe lovers, my advice is to insert your footwear in racks and in boxes. They will be easy to look for and won’t cause a mess scattered on the floor.

Belt Rack

  • Stuck on where to put your belts and you’re forever losing space for it in the closet? Build a small belt rack to help better access your go to belts.

Underwear in the closet

  • DON’T BE AN UNDERWEAR HOARDER – Narrow down your underwear to 12-14 pairs. Make sure you have the neutrals always displayed where you can see it. Keep the printed ones for the weekend. I asked Jeff what is his favorite brand of men’s underwear and he swears by  Tommy John. There is no adjustments needed,no pulling or tucking and everything fits in place, every single time.

  1. I just packed away my winter clothes (assorted sweaters and such I only wear when it’s really cold) which felt great… but then the weather changed again and got all cold and rainy and I was like, “dang it”. My closet is okay-ish, but I always try to sort into categories and by color, and then it just gets messed up. I don’t know why I do that.

  2. These tips are great! Especially really looking at whether we use the clothes or bag or if its just taking up space.

  3. My husband needs to totally do his side of the closet. He actually has the bigger side and so much stuff…it’s spilling over to my side. I need to show him these questions.

  4. I try to detox (I actually do biannual ebay-selling sprees), but wow your closet looks so much more organized than mine! Even with winter clothes away it is still a mess!

  5. I really do try to keep my closet looking like this…and try to do the “if I buy something new I get rid of 2” thing. But it still mounts up again. I have started doing a Swap with my friends every couple months, its fun and we each get “new” things and get rid of things we don’t wear. I got a almost brand new Anne Klein coat. Thanks for the tips!

  6. Great tips, I know my wardrobe is a mess, but every time i start detoxing it, i get all nostalgic with the clothes, and then i cant let go of them =D, what should i do??

    1. Think about what you really need if your wore it at least more than 3 times go down the list and think of the upside you will invest in more apparel that you will actually wear thank have a garment collecting dust

  7. Loving all of your advice, I definitely find it helpful to detox the clothing but luckily for me I didn’t have much to throw out before and I’m finally buying new things now. Thanks for sharing! xx adaatude.com

  8. Detoxing my wardrobe MUST be on my to-do list in the next couple weeks. The weather is getting warm and all my cold weather clothes are still out! Great tips!
