A signature look is a term I never identified with., Every time my friends try to determine the key items I’m known to wear they could never find a way to put into words other than, Melrose dresses differently.Agreeing with my buddies, I can’t envision one style I’ve clasp to more than any other over the years. I’m not sure my personal style has any defining characteristic. On the other hand, I’m often inspired by fashion icons signature looks, such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s elegant scarves, oversized shades, and peacoats.Another fashion icon with a recognizable look is Bianca Jagger, a personal favorite. She favored high waisted pants, furs, and sequins.
I also seek my fashion inspiration in varies ways and on a daily basis. Some ways I look for inspiration is the following:
- People watching on the train
- Skimming through magazines or zines (a zine is a small magazine with self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images)
- Going on a pinning spree on Pinterest
- Analyzing actors outfit on indie films
- Occasionally visiting the Museum of FIT
Then one day I was looking for fashion inspiration other than the list above. As I was searching online for free events in the area, I got a call from fellow Blogger Nadya. She told me about an exhibition named Manus X Machina: Fashion In The Age of Technology. The exhibition includes multiple fashion designers work, ranging from handmade and machine couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear masterpieces.
Although it was a rainy day, I was craving to see the exhibition. I linked up with Nadya, and we arrived at the Met Museum on 5th Avenue, where Manus X Machina is held.We entered the museum, and the security guard guided us to the right direction.Once we found the first ivory fabricated mannequin, our jaw dropped in awe.We were in the same room as the exquisite antique gold floor length gown designed by Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel (as photographed above.)
After analyzing a few dresses, I realized the beauty of the exhibit. The message is accepting the advancement of technology on a couture level especially being a part of the 21st century. Although manual labor will always play a crucial role in the luxury status of the fashion field, we have the tools to help designers push the envelope creating 3-D printing. An example of a 3-D motif is in the picture to the right showcasing the golden silicone dress.A gull x-ray inspired Iris Van Herpen laser-cut feather dress with hand-applied bird skulls. The internal wires and the skull head processed through computer modeling.Other forms of technical advances are bonding and laminating, laser cutting, and ultrasonic welding. The improvement of technology helped the little girl in all of us fall in love with the over top style of haute couture again and again. The displays in The Met museum helps challenge our beliefs of luxury doesn’t have to be solely handmade. The end result is times are changing, and we are accepting the fact that realistically not everything can be handmade, but we are not ruling out man labor yet. It’s up to the designer to critique what is best for the high-end consumer and what can hold longevity poise and structure.
Therefore, each design in the exhibit is created by both elements, hand, and machine made.If you’re in town you should check out the show before it closes on September 5, 2016, you won’t regret fawning over the bedazzled dressed and feathered gowns I promise.
Below are some of my favs from the exhibit:
