IMG_5113The sunshine should be child play, nonetheless, within the past few weeks of spring, it seems like the sun has been struggling. Every time I step outside, I think it believes I am a newborn and set on playing a game of peek-a-boo. As the sun covers his eyes, I imagine the white sandy beaches, emerald palm trees, and refreshing drinks. Now, I am home from work and, the sun still did not uncover his hands from his eyes, I spent all day in a foggy mist.

Dreading my long day at my 9-5 job, I placed my things down on my kitchen counter. Getting settled at home; my feet shifted towards my bedroom. I curled up on my bed and opened up my metallic MacBook Pro. Looking for places to live, where the sun will shine more than three months a year. I decided to check out a real state website: Elliman.com. The website showcased various stunning Florida properties. I fixated on a few images and imagined living in the sunshine state.

Glancing at the pictures, I felt as if I was already there. Then an idea struck me like when you are watching cartoons, and a light bulb will magically appear over the character’s head. I decided to create my very own Florida room. The Florida room will be a place I can come home to, bringing the sunshine to my day all year round. One that will make me think you know what, I can use that sick day, and I don’t care if I am not sick. Then I skipped around my room, gathering my stacks of magazines, scissors, glue sticks, and my premade pattern boards I presented at my job as geometric printed sheet ideas for a client. If you are still wondering what I do, my position is a Sales and Merchandising Assistant at West Point Home, a home textile company.

Envisioning a huge window placed next to an open brick wall helped me start cutting pieces off a magazine. A setup I originally wanted for my room when I was looking for Brooklyn apartments. Now, how can I make an open brick wall room feel like Florida? The first thing I thought of was the emerald green palm trees and scoured the pages for a bed with the same hue. I decorated around the green bed and everything else found its place, situating well on the style board. The other details making up my dream Florida room are:

  • Hanging Greenery
  • Printed Leaf Waste Basket
  • Mason Jar
  • Multiple Paintings (including scenery, embracing vibrant colors and texture)
  • Brazilian Walnut Wooden Sculpture
  • A Bowl of fruits (placed perfectly on the dresser for midnight snacks and breakfast on the go)

As I was in the groove, I did not want to stop at my dream Florida room; I wanted to make my Florida room real. So, I set up a style board with things I can place in my apartment now. To brighten up the dullness of my eggshell white windows and walls, I incorporated a tangerine circle rug onto the style board. Everything else felt like I was connecting Lego pieces together. The other excellent points of my realistic Florida room are:

  • Crystal Clear Glasses and Vase
  • Hickory Wood Dresser
  • White Quilted Headboard
  • Stone Roundtable
  • Bamboo Hamper
  • Deep Teal Stool

I glimpsed at my floor; cutouts spread out, and pages of my magazine are now wearing thin. My Spotify is blasting music I can easily nod my head to, making me want the fun not to end. I decided to create one more room, a room for the future. Not me in 10 years, however, for a future mini-me. As I held my scissors, pondering what would my child in the future want as a sweet tropical escape. The first thing I can think off was merely apparent in any tropical area, SEASHELLS. Placing seashells in a wooden toy box would give it a peaceful feeling. The other goodies I styled in the mini-me room are:

  • Printed Dec Pillows
  • Printed Shower Curtains (used as window curtains)
  • Frameless Standing Mirror
  • Floral Wallpaper (used as an accent wall)
  • Colorful Ceramic Vases
  • Woven Acapulco Chair

After creating the future mini-me room, I shut off my Spotify. While I stood up, snipped magazine pages flew off my lap, and I decided to prepare myself for bed. As I got ready, my thoughts were multiplying with different places I can shop for my realistic Florida room, but let’s save that for a day where I am less sleepy.
