You don’t think of wearing sweatshirts and hoodies in the spring/ summer season. However, The collection Eddie Eddie by Billy Tommy will make you reconsider.His designs resemble a mix of the then and now hip hop culture while reviving every true fashionista love for vintage gems.
I initially was drawn to the Eddie Eddie brand in 2013.One day I was scouring through magazines pages, being a typical fashion blogger and paused when I saw a spread devoted to the Harlem-born rapper, A$AP Rocky.Not only did I like A$AP Rocky because I enjoy listening to his music, but (were also born in the same borough and) I respect the influence he has in the fashion world. As I flip through A$AP Rocky’s spread, I fell in love with a dope sweater design by Sean Kinny.(Sean Kinny is the designer of Eddie Eddie by Billy Tommy.) The sky blue sweater seemed like someone doodled a dollar sign in the center.The dollar sign aligned with various woven diamond patterns.This is one example of the designer many creations.
As the years went by I saw Kinny’s designs in e-commerce shops such as Refinery 29 and La Petite Mort.

The Eddie Eddie by Billy Tommy brand started with the designer digging through piles of apparel in thrift stores.Similar to Sophia Amoruso, writer of Girlboss and owner of American retailer Nasty Girl.Sophia Amoruso got a start making sure her vintage finds were intact.She had to make sure her finds were in perfection condition to become an eBay resale win.There is a difference between Sophia Amoruso resale and Sean Kinny resale.Sean Kinny recreates the apparel while making it feel like a custom made piece for consumers.Generally, his creative process is taking the garment and hand-knit or screenprint it with sayings or images relating to the New York street culture.

Sean Kinny showed his SS17 Eddie Eddie by Billy Tommy collection at Style Fashion Week in Hammerstein Ballroom.
The show started with a rapping duo performance.After the pair had excited the crowd, the first model came out literally sweeping the runway stage.The model was wearing a half tulle half tishirt which the designer named appproprately, “fancy dress”. After she finished sweeping the stage she stop in the middle to take a selfie.Once I saw that I immediately laugh, the rest of the crowd did too.I believe it was refreshing to see a show during NYFW16 that didn’t focus on models giving the typical serious face and adapting to the times of now.
With Instagram and Snapchat in almost every millennials phone, the motivational speech to build charisma by staring yourself at the mirror is dead.The new age fashion goers wear what they want and do what they want and the Eddie Eddie by Billy Tommy SS17 collection represented it perfectly.
My personal favorite is a female over-sized red and black sweat suit.The red sweatshirt read, “Close your eyes and imagine the perfect cut dress that fits.” The pants have a matching mantra that gives off the fuck you vibes for what a woman is expected to wear.
Sweats are the new suits. AWESOME!
